Cooper Rushes for Bowl Record 198 Yards to Lead ECU Over Ohio 37-20

Dec. 23, 2013

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. -- It was a good start and an even better finish for Vintavious Cooper, Shane Carden and East Carolina as the Pirates scored the game’s final 20 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Ohio, 37-20, in the sixth annual Beef O’Brady’s Bowl at Tropicana Field Monday afternoon.

East Carolina (10-3, 6-2 C-USA) jumped to a 14-0 first quarter lead but the Pirates found themselves trailing 20-17 early in the fourth quarter following a Josiah Yazdani 28-yard field goal that temporarily put Ohio (7-6, 4-4 MAC) in the lead for the first time.

Ohio appeared to be in position to extend the lead when the Bobcats recovered an onside kick at their own 48 following the Yazdani field goal. But the ECU defense stiffened and made its biggest stop of the game, forcing Yazdani to attempt and miss a 45-yard field goal.

Cooper, who was named ECU’s MVP, rushed for a career-best and Bowl record 198 yards on 25 carries. He turned the game back in ECU’s favor following the missed field goal. The senior back capped a 5-play 71-yard drive with a 31-yard touchdown scamper, his first of two TD runs on the day.

“In the first half the offensive line played way beyond what was expected," said Cooper. "But for us, that’s the standard that we hold for our team.  We hold ourselves to a high standard, and we understand definitely what it takes to make plays on any given Saturday or like today, any given Monday.”

Ohio went three-and-out on its next possession and the Pirates quickly added to their four-point lead.  Carden, who set Beef 'O’ Brady’s Bowl passing records for completions and attempts (29-45, 273 yards), added to his big statistical day by catching a 14-yard touchdown pass on a flea flicker pass from wide receiver Cam Worthy with 7:29 left in the game.

ECU finished the scoring just past the two-minute mark when Cooper completed his record-setting afternoon with a 22-yard run to push the lead to 37-20.

The Pirates, who became the third straight Conference USA team to win this six-year event in St. Petersburg (Marshall in 2011 and UCF in 2012), took control of the game in the opening minutes and appeared to be on their way to a decisive victory.

ECU jumped ahead less than five minutes into the game on a 5-yard scoring toss from Carden to Worthy. The 55-yard drive was set up by the game’s first turnover, an interception by Pirates’ safety Michael Dobson.

The Pirates pushed the early lead to 14-0 when Breon Allen finished off an 11-play, 76-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 27 seconds left in the opening period.

Ohio answered quickly after ECU’s second score with a 4-play, 74-yard scoring drive that finished with a 17-yard scoring pass from Tyler Tettleton to Daz’ Patterson. The key play of the drive was a 26-yard pass off a double reverse from Tettleton to Patterson. That play gained the Bobcats an additional 15 yards when a roughing the passer penalty was tacked on and put Ohio at the 17-yard line, from where Tettleton and Patterson again hooked up for the Bobcats’ first score of the game.

ECU’s next drive stalled at the Ohio 39 and after a Pirates punt, Ohio tied the game on a Beef O’Brady’s Bowl record 80-yard touchdown pass from Derrius Vick to wide receiver Donte Foster, Ohio’s Most Valuable Player. That play helped bolster Foster’s numbers as he finished the game with six catches for a bowl-record 160 yards and the one score.

ECU regained the lead with 1:01 left in the half on a 41-yard field goal by Warren Harvey.

The Pirates had opportunities to widen their lead in the opening half but were stopped on downs twice inside the Bobcats’ 15-yard line.  A 7-play, 62-yard possession was halted on fourth down at the Ohio 15 in the first quarter, and the Pirates again were stymied in the red zone at the Ohio 14 after an 11-play, 61-yard drive late in the second period.

“First, I want to thank the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl for what a great experience and the city of St. Petersburg," said ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill. "They treated our team first class. I have been blessed to have been to a lot of bowl games and this is one of the top venues.”

Kickoff Luncheon

Quotes:

Dewey Bozella
Kickoff Luncheon Speaker
ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award Winner
On his life experience

"I'm happy to have the opportunity to talk to these students and let them know their greatest gift is youth. I want to share to the students that they have the final decision. In life you make the final decision, do something with yourself. If I can do it then what excuse do you have? At the end of the day your decisions fall back on you, no one else."

Honorary Chairman Mike Alstott
On the bowl
"I'll be at the game tomorrow. Football is my life, I enjoy being able to be a part of something so special and bringing the community together. I want the student-athletes to know football is important but you can also learn life lessons."

ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill
On Dewey Bozella
"He's inspirational, what I like about him is he'll talk to them, not at them. This has been a first-class bowl. We're all anxious to get the game going. The team and staff have handled the transition well. I was asked what I want for Christmas and this is it, I'm here with 125 of my sons."

On O

hio Head Coach Frank Solich
"I have great respect for Coach Solich, even with our running competition."

Ohio Head Coach Frank Solich
On ECU
"They're a strong team, they play hard and physical. We're going to take care of the ball and try to create some turnovers. I woke up this morning with the realization the game is right around the corner. We are at the point where we want to get it done. Our practice yesterday was one of the better ones we've had. Tropicana Field is a great field to play in. It's remarkable how they turned a baseball field into a football field. We have our hands full but we're looking forward to the challenge."

Battle of the Bands

The Battle of the Bands took place at the TradeWinds Beach Resort today. The bands went head-to-head in multiple events including a dance and a tug-of-war competition.

On the team’s afternoon practice

“Another good practice today. The boys have done a good job compartmentalizing and really enjoyed themselves.”

RB Vintavious Cooper

On final practices and last career game
“It’s been crazy, it’s gone by so fast. You try not to get too emotional but it’s bittersweet. I’m definitely excited about Monday. It would mean a lot to win the last game. I’ve met a lot of amazing people, everyone is family. Everyone’s bonded which makes our team click. It would be nice to end on a good note, to win would be amazing."

K Warren Harvey
On being in St. Pete“It’s good to have fun but this is a business trip, we’re here to win. We’re here for one reason, but we’re not afraid to have fun and it makes for a nice atmosphere to be around."

QB Shane Carden
On the Bowl experience
“It’s crazy how fast this experience has gone by. Seniors have earned a team to be remembered by. It has been an awesome Bowl experience, it’s my favorite so far.

Ohio holds second practice at Tropicana Field

Quotes:

WR Donte Foster
On how it feels to play in a dome
“There is a big difference in the perception. When we first got out here, it looked like the defense was two miles away. It shouldn’t be hard to adjust but it was a good to get a practice here.”

On playing his final game
“It’s been great career for me and I am going to have all the emotions come game day. The Bowl Committee has treated us amazingly. I am sure all the guys will be ready to help the seniors get one more win.”

CB Devin Bass
On East Carolina’s team
“They have a very good wide receiver. There is not really a drop off between the best guy and the last guy; they are all pretty good. The QB is very efficient. He is really good at seeing what you’re doing and making the right throws. We are going to disguise what we do and catch him off guard.”

CB Travis Carrie
On today’s practice
“We definitely feel confident. The last day of preparation is always trick play day. The coaches are putting things into order to get your mind going. We had great energy and it was good to get a practice inside the dome.”

On shutting down the ECU offense
“Frustrating the quarterback is going to be the key. We want to ma

ke sure he doesn't feel comfortable, we do not want to allow him to sit back in the pocket. If you allow him to sit back in the pocket, he will pick you apart.”

Friday Night’s Team Cruise Recap

The first Bowl Week event that brought the two teams together took place on Friday evening.  As the sun was setting the teams boarded the Yacht Starship at the Renaissance Vinoy Boat Dock for a cruise tour along Tampa Bay providing stunning views of downtown St. Petersburg and the holiday lights dotting the shoreline.  Following a dinner on the main floor of the yacht, the teams headed up to the top deck where a DJ provided music and the remainder of the cruise turned into an opportunity for players on the two teams to show off their dance moves in an impromptu dance-off that’s becoming a Bowl Week tradition.

Ohio Accepts Invite to 2013 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (December 8, 2013) - Ohio, fresh off its 51 point scoring explosion in its season finale, has accepted an invitation to the 2013 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg marking the fifth consecutive bowl game appearance for the school and sixth in the last eight years. The Bobcats will face East Carolina from Conference USA in the sixth edition of the bowl gamefrom Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Monday, Dec. 23 at 2:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Bobcats, from the Mid-American Athletic Conference (MAC), fill the slot contracted to the American Athletic Conference, which didn't have enough teams to fulfill its bowl commitments. Ohio will be the second MAC team to play in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. Ball State represented the MAC last season in St. Petersburg filling the spot that could not be filled by a BIG EAST school.

"Ohio University football has a 100-plus year tradition," said Brett Dulaney, Executive Director of the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg. "We look forward to hosting the Bobcats and their alumni and fans, many of which also reside in Florida."

"We are very honored and excited to be invited to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl in St. Petersburg," said Jim Schaus, Ohio Director of Athletics. "The bowl has a national reputation of doing things first class and taking great care of the participating teams. I am ecstatic for our team, coaches, fans and university. These opportunities benefit our program and in so many ways. We can't wait to get to St. Pete!"

Ohio (7-5, 4-4), will be looking for its third win over a C-USA team this season. The Bobcats had back-to-back games with C-USA schools in early September defeating North Texas 27-21 and then Marshall 34-31.

"The Ohio University football program could not be more excited for an opportunity to compete in the 2013 Beef O' Brady's Bowl," said Ohio University head coach Frank Solich. "The location of this bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla. is a tremendous destination for our players, coaches and fans to close out the year. I believe our program has shown a great deal of consistency with this being our fifth-consecutive bowl appearance."

Solich is in his ninth season as the head coach at Ohio and has led the program to five consecutive bowl appearances. The Bobcats explosive offense, which has scored 34 or more points six times this season, is led by senior QB Tyler Tettleton who owns 27 school records. Tettleton's top target is senior WR Donte Foster who has pulled in a career-best 63 receptions and six touchdowns. The kicking game has been a consistent asset all season with place kicker Josiah Yazdani who finished the year by not missing a field goal, going a perfect 12-for-12.  He is one of only four kickers in the country that have not missed a field goal all year. His perfect field goal percentage is the highest in school history.

Ohio and East Carolina have met only two times in the past, with the Pirates winning both contests. The last time the two met was in 1998 with ECU winning 21-14.

Arthur Ashe Courage Award Winner Dewey Bozella will be the 2013 Kickoff Luncheon Speaker

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (December 2, 2013) - Dewey Bozella, the 2011 Arthur Ashe Courage Award winner and boxer will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2013 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl Kickoff Luncheon on Sunday, Dec. 22 at Noon at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort. Bozella, who joined an impressive group of past Arthur Ashe Courage Award winners including Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali and Billie Jean King, spent 26 years of wrongful imprisonment in a 1983 murder case where he maintained his innocence the entire time and exhausted every appeal.  He was even offered more than four separate chances for an early release but he refused to admit a guilty.  He was proven innocent and released from jail in October 2009 when new evidence was uncovered that exonerated him.

While in jail Bozella earned his GED, bachelors and masters degrees, working as a counselor for other prisoners.  He also found strength and purpose through boxing, becoming the light heavyweight champion of Sing Sing Prison.  Bozella always had dreams to have just one professional fight and his wish was granted on October 15, 2011 when he fought and beat opponent, Larry Hopkins, 30, of Houston, in his first and only professional boxing match.

“The keynote speaker at our Kickoff Luncheon is an important component of the bowl week experience we provide for our teams” said Brett Dulaney, Executive Director, Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg.  “We are honored to have Dewey as our featured speaker at this year’s Kickoff Luncheon.  Dewey’s story is truly inspirational and I’m sure everyone at the luncheon will be moved by his tragic story of injustice and the perseverance, courage and faith.”

2012 Game Recap: UCF downs Ball State, 38-17

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Central Florida will head into the new-look Big East off an impressive showing in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

The Knights dominated Ball State 38-17 on Friday night in their final game as a member of Conference USA, amassing 494 yards total offense while holding the high-scoring Cardinals to their lowest point total of the season.

"Offensively, this is one of the best games we had all year," quarterback Blake Bortles said. "Everyone just really picked up and went, and that's why we won the way we did."

Bortles threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns. The redshirt sophomore also rushed for a career-high 80 yards and scored on a 6-yard run that helped UCF (10-4) build a 21-point halftime lead.

"I'm really impressed with (Bortles) and what he did and can do," Ball State coach Pete Lembo said. "He moved the ball downfield very easily, and I'm sure they're excited to have him back for another two years."

Bortles tossed first-half TD passes 7 and 5 yards to Latavius Murray, who also scored on a 2-yard run. J.J. Worton's 7-yard scoring reception made 35-10 late in the third quarter.

"I thought Blake did everything he needed to do by making the right decisions," UCF coach George O'Leary said. "Basically, he made the right decisions that moved us down the field. He really showed tonight why he's our guy out there."

Ball State (9-4) was hoping to finish with at least 10 wins for the third time in school history. However, its high-powered offense sputtered while being held 18 points below its season average. Keith Wenning threw a 7-yard TD pass to Willie Snead early in the second quarter, but the Cardinals didn't get into end zone again until Snead scored on a 16-yard reception with 5 minutes remaining.

Bortles completed 22-of-33 passes without an interception to become UCF's first 3,000-yard passer since 2002. His three TD passes were a career-best and tied the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl record.

Wenning, meanwhile, was 22 of 34 for 217 yards and two TDs for Ball State, which had a six-game winning streak snapped.

UCF, one of several schools joining the Big East next season, rebounded from an overtime loss in the Conference USA title game to finish with double-digit victories for the third time since stepping up to the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Knights also won 10 in 2007 and 2010, when they were Conference USA champions.

The Knights' loss to Tulsa in the Conference USA title game kept them close to home for the postseason. Instead of heading to the Liberty Bowl for the second time in three years, coach George O'Leary and his players settled for a 100-mile trek west from Orlando to Tropicana Field, the home of major league baseball's Tampa Bay Rays.

O'Leary also brought his team to St. Petersburg in 2009, losing to Rutgers by three touchdowns. Friday night's victory improved the 66-year-old coach's record to 4-5 in bowl games, including a 2-3 mark with UCF.

Ball State's first bowl appearance since 2008 is the latest step in an impressive turnaround under Lembo, whose team suffered early losses to Clemson, Kent State and Northern Illinois before winning six straight down the stretch to put themselves into a position to fill the Big East's slot in the Beef 'O' Brady's game because the league didn't have enough bowl-eligible teams to meet its commitment.

The Cardinals beat two teams from BCS conferences in the same season for the first time, defeating Indiana and South Florida in consecutive weeks. They had the MAC's second-most productive offense at 471.3 yards and 35 points per game and won four times by scoring the winning points in the final 2 minutes or overtime.

But with UCF dominating time of possession, Ball State never really had an opportunity to get its high-octane show going.

The Knights held the ball for nearly 13 minutes of the opening quarter, compiling a 159-15 advantage in total yardage. By halftime UCF had run 42 plays and gained 299 yards to build its lead to 28-7.

Jahwan Edwards rushed for 89 yards on 14 carries for Ball State, which fell to 0-7-1 in eight bowl appearances. Snead had seven receptions for 78 yards.

"Ball State came with a good game plan and they are a well-coached, very good team," O'Leary said. "They wouldn't have nine wins if they weren't."

Hospital Visit:

The Cardinals and Knights began their day at All Children's Hospital, a pediatric treatment center located in St. Petersburg. Players, cheerleaders, and mascots for both teams were inattendance along with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Mike Alstott, the honorarychairman of the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. Alstott and his family have spent the past 18 years visiting the All Children's Hospital and this is the fifth year that the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl has come to the hospital. With the bowl game on everyone's mind this week, it is important that these players take a step back and realize the effect they can have not only on the field, but off the field as well. As student athletes, these young men serve as role models and their presence at All Children's Hospital made a world of difference for these kids and their families, especially during the holiday season.

Kickoff Luncheon:

It was another beautiful day in sunny Florida as the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg hosted its kickoff luncheon at the historicRenaissance Vinoy in St. Petersburg. The event brought together both teams to highligt their achievements during the 2012 college football season. The festivities included opening remarks from the Master of Ceremonies Dave Reynolds, highlights of bowl week and head coach's remarks from Ball State's Pete Lembo and UCF's George O'Leary, who are both anxious to take the field tomorrow night at Tropicana Field. Ball State Athletic Director Bill Scholl and UCF Athletic DirectorTodd Stansbury also spoke on the accomplishments of their teams. The keynote speaker was former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, who talked to players about the challenges of life and the game.

Pete Lembo, Ball State Head Coach

"We are excited to be here. It's been a great season for our team, we've been grinding every week. Our kids are excited about this opportunity; many have not been to a bowl game before so this has been a great week. The hospitality has just been phenomenal and now we are closing in on kickoff and that's what it is all about."

George O'Leary, UCF Head Coach

"It's been a great week. I think the bowl committee has done a great job with the players and the coaches and the fans that were here, it was well organized."

Battle of the Bands:

Ball State and UCF fans, bands, cheerleaders, and mascots met on St. Pete Beach outside the Sirata Beach Resort and Conference center for fun and festivities under the sun. The bands of both teams battled back-and-forth on the sand. The bands started off with their schools theme song and then branched off and played songs such as Outkast's "Hey Ya" and Fun's "We are Young." Among the spectators were students, parents of the players, and some passers by. In the crowd was first-time Florida visitor Laura Langille from Canada. "This is honestly like nothing I've ever seen," said Langille. "This is school spirit at its finest." The Cardinals and Knights cheerleaders then competed in a tug-o-war. Finally, the bands headed over to the Coconut Pavilion for a corn fritter eating contest. Ball State won by eating over 60 corn fritters.

Block Party:

Fans spent the eve of the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg at Ferg's Sports Bar in downtown St. Petersburg for the Bowl Block Party. The teams' bands, cheerleaders, and mascots were all present for the night's festivities. Spectators came out for live bands, interactive games, displays, bowl tickets and merchandise, which were all made available. The UCF and Ball State coaches shows were broadcasted for fans and while everyone was in good spirits, the rivalry between the teams could be sensed among the crowd.

“Ball State is a hot team right now, winning six straight, including a road win over conference foe Toledo, which was ranked in the Top 25 at the time,” said Brett Dulaney, Executive Director of the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg. “We look forward to providing a great bowl week experience for the team and their fans.”

"Ball State University is very excited to participate in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg,” said Bill Scholl, Director of Athletics for Ball State. “We have heard great things about this bowl and are sure it will be an enjoyable experience for our student-athletes, alumni, and fans from all over the country.  Ball State’s football program is proud to represent the Mid-American Conference at the bowl, and we are looking forward to the event."

Ball State (9-3, 6-2 MAC) scored 30 or more points in 10 of its 12 games this season, including a season-high 52 points in a win over Ohio on November 14.  A total of 13 members of the Ball State football team were honored by the Mid-American Conference, including five first-team selections.  Among the first team selections is sophomore WR Willie Snead (Belle Glade, FL), who pulled in a team-best 82 receptions for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns.  Snead ranks fourth on Ball State's record book in both receptions and receiving yards in a single season.

Head Coach Pete Lembo, who is in his second year with the Cardinals, took over a four-win squad following the 2010 season, and led the program to its most wins since 2008.

“Our football program is extremely pleased to be representing the Mid-American Conference at the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg,” said Lembo.  “We have had an outstanding season, and are looking forward to allowing the fans of Florida and our fans across the country to see our exciting team.  This is an honor for our football program and our university, and our fans and alum are excited about the invitation.”

The Cardinals are making their first bowl appearance since 2008 when they played Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl. Ball State has played in seven bowls and is seeking its first bowl win in its history.

This will be the fourth meeting between Ball State and UCF.  All three meetings took place while UCF was a member of the MAC (2002-04).  The Cardinals, which own a 2-1 series advantage, scored a come-from-behind 21-17 win at home in the last matchup on November 13, 2004.

Bowl Teams Set to Visit All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg During Bowl Week

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (November 19, 2012) - One of the most redeeming experiences during bowl week for the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburghappens each year when the teams visit patients at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.  It is an emotional event that brings the Bowl opponents together for an invaluable investment in time.  This year's visit will take place on ThursdayDec. 20at 9:00 a.m.

Team representatives, including coaches, team captains, cheerleaders and mascots, along with Honorary Game Chairman and former NFL star Mike Alstott, will visit the children and take pictures, sign autographs and provide gifts from ESPN and memorabilia from each school.  In many cases, though, the most valuable gifts are the priceless hugs. Last year, Vince Papale, who inspired the Walt Disney Movie "Invincible" and served as the Keynote Speaker at last year's Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg Kickoff Luncheon, also made it a point to be at the event.

"When the teams from the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg visit our patients, it really brightens their day," said Kristin Maier, Director of the Child Life Program at All Children's Hospital.  "It creates a break from the anxiety a child is often feeling while being in the hospital.  You can see the excited look on their faces when the players and team mascots enter the room - it's almost like a 'WOW' factor."

"Year after year, athletic directors from both schools rave about how great of an experience the hospital visit is for their players and coaches," said Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg Executive Director Brett Dulaney. "The visit to All Children's Hospital is an integral part of the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl and we're proud that we have done this in each year of our bowl."

The 2012 visit to All Children's Hospital will mark the fifth time in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg's five years of existence. Media are permitted and encouraged to attend and cover the event.

2011 GAME STORY AND NOTES

2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg

Game Story - Notes

Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011

Dobson Leads Marshall past FIU 20-10 to Win the 2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Wide receiver Aaron Dobson was named Marshall’s MVP as he scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Thundering Herd to a 20-10 win over FIU in the Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Conference USA’s first win in the event’s history was seen by 20,072 fans and a national television audience on ESPN.

T.Y. Hilton was named FIU’s MVP as the senior caught a game record eight passes for 88 yards, accumulating a total of 147 all-purpose yards, in his final appearance for the Panthers. True freshman signal caller Rakeem Cato was strong in his postseason debut for the Thundering Herd, completing 27-of-39 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Defensive stars included Jordan Hunt with 13 tackles, all solo, including two for a loss and a sack and Marshall’s Tyson Gale who made 10 stops, 2.5 of them for a loss with a sack.

After a pair of fruitless possessions, Marshall would open the scoring on the game’s third possession, marching 45 yards in 10 plays for a 37-yard Tyler Warner field goal. The drive was keyed by a remarkable 25-yard completion from Cato to Jermaine Kelson who caught the 3rd-and-8 pass one handed, while being interfered with.

The next two scores would both be by the Panthers. FIU broke into the point column with 1:31 left in the first quarter when Hilton zipped to the end zone on an end around that capped an 8-play, 47-yard march to pay dirt. FIU extended its lead to seven points at 10-3 midway through the second quarter when Jack Griffin sent a Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl record 46-yard field goal through the uprights.

Just 23 seconds before halftime, Marshall knotted the game at 10-10 when Aaron Dobson made a tremendous over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone on a 31-yard fade pass from Cato.

The two defenses began to assert themselves in a third quarter where the sides combined for a total of just 106 yards of offense. While the defenses held each offense at bay it would be a special teams play that changed the complexion of the game.

A Darryl Roberts sack on third down forced the Panthers to punt from their own 22 yard line midway through the fourth quarter. Zach Dunston snuck in off of the edge and met Jermaine Kelson at punter Josh Brisk’s feet, blocking the kick. Billy Mitchell gathered the loose ball and advanced it to the eight yard line where officials ruled that he fumbled it forwards into the end zone where the Herd recovered. The apparent touchdown came off the score board but the momentum generated remained.

FIU’s defense held but Warner’s 39-yard field goal with 5:16 to play would prove to be the game-winning score.

"It's been a strength of ours all season long,” Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said. “We weren't getting anything done offensively and we had to create something.  We blocked six punts in our six wins this season. We have been able to win the close games this year."

FIU fumbled the ball on the ensuing possession and Marshall consumed the majority of the remaining game clock from there, sealing victory on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dobson on a fourth down play with 30 seconds left in the game.

FIU and Marshall held their final walk-throughs at Tropicana Field on Monday afternoon.

Mario Cristobal, FIU Head Coach
“This trip has been such a great first-class experience.  It’s hard to believe it’s time to play the game.  We haven’t played in three weeks, so in our final walk-through we’ll be making sure we are organized and haven’t let anything slip.”

Doc Holliday, Marshall Head Coach
“There isn’t any question after watching FIU play against Louisville and Central Florida that they are an extremely talented team.  Our kids understand that and are very excited for this outstanding opportunity.”

KICKOFF LUNCHEON at Renaissance Vinoy Resort:
The annual Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl kickoff luncheon, featuring FIU head coach Mario Cristobal, Marshall head coach Doc Holliday and keynote speaker Vince Papale was held on Monday afternoon at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in downtown St. Petersburg.  Papale, who was the subject of the blockbuster Disney movie, “Invincible,” the stirring football drama starring Mark Wahlberg as Papale, shared his motivational story with coaches, student-athletes, athletics staff, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl staff, sponsors, community leaders and fans at the luncheon. Papale’s speech provided tremendous motivation for all in attendance. At the conclusion of his speech, he received a standing ovation. Two former Tampa Bay Buccaneer players participated in the luncheon, including former quarterback Shaun King, who served as emcee and former Pro Bowl Mike Alstott, who is serving as the game’s Honorary Chairman.

Vince Papale, Keynote Speaker
“I took away a lot of energy and passion from the kids on FIU and Marshall.  To get a chance to hang out with Mike Alstott was also pretty cool.  I sat next to Doc Holliday and I can tell you the coaches are already in game mode. They have their game faces on.”

Mario Cristobal, FIU Head Coach
“Vince (Papale) delivered a great message for our team as well as everyone else at the luncheon.  I think everyone (on our team) raised their hand when he asked if anyone had seen his movie (Invincible).  He has a very inspirational story.  We can relate to his story in the fact that we are only playing in only our sixth year of (FBS) football.”

2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg

Sunday, Dec. 18

Today’s Weather:
Hi:  75 degrees
Lo:  65 degress
Mostly Sunny

Practice:
Marshall had its first practice at Tropicana Field this morning from 9:00 am - 11:00 am.

Doc Holliday, Marshall Head Coach
“We are playing a quality team in FIU that’s well coached and extremely talented.  Just like any other game we play, we have to make sure that we are well prepared or we’ll have problems.”

On the progression of freshman QB Rakeem Cato
“He has gotten better as the season has gone along.  He’s a typical freshman. You go through a lot of growing pains with freshmen.  Fortunately he’s got some games under his belt now.   He grew throughout the year. You saw the improvement he made from game one until the end of the year against East Carolina.”

Vinny Curry, Marshall Defensive End
"We’re definitely excited about playing at this point.  We worked hard for this game.  We’re down here on a mission and that’s to win a football game.“

Tyson Gale, Marshall Linebacker
“They (FIU) have the same kind of skilled players as Houston and Southern Miss.  We just have to take the same approach.  We can’t miss open tackles.”

On his final game
“This is a big game for me because it’s my last game as a senior and I know I may never play a football game again.”

FIU Practice
FIU practiced for 90 minutes on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Tropicana Field.

Mario Cristobal, FIU Head Coach
“We’re ready, we've prepared hard and very thorough. It's such a tremendous opportunity for our players; they have been so enthusiastic at practices. It's time to play this game and put on a great show for the city of St. Petersburg and show who we are.”
On Marshall QB Rakeem Cato
“He's a good player and it's hard to slow him down. He's an athletic quarterback, you have to play assignment football, by that I mean, don't let your eyes drift, don't get caught looking at something you’re not supposed to be and make sure you are on point the entire game for 60 minutes.”

Wesley Carroll, FIU Quarterback
"These guys have been motivated and we have had awesome preparation.  Our practices have been high tempo; a lot of energy, a lot of positive reinforcement. Everybody is amped up and ready to go to get this going."

On the Bowl Experience:
"It has been great here. The bowl has done a great job. The food has been great, the hospitality has been unbelievable. The cruise last night was unbelievable. It was cool to get out there on the water."

BEACH BASH at TradeWinds Island Resort

Both teams arrived at the resort in the afternoon and after team meals, the players took advantage of the numerous beach amenities including a water slide, beach volleyball court and of course the beach.

Later in the afternoon the teams met for their first competitions of the week at the main pool deck.  Surrounded by fans from both teams, players from each team competed in a belly-flop contest, hula-hoop contest, talent show and a dance-off.  Each team claimed two wins so the deciding contest will be on the field on Tuesday night at 8:00 pm in the 2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg.

Marshall Accepts Conference USA spot in 2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Marshall, led by a big-play offense and an opportunistic defense, is headed to the 2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg as the Conference USArepresentative after accepting a bid. The Thundering Herd will face FIU in the fourth edition of the ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN, owned bowl game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. On Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

“Marshall football has a storied tradition dating back to 1895 and the program appears back on the rise,” said Brett Dulaney, Executive Director of the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg. “We are excited to welcome the Thundering Herd to our game for the first time and are looking forward to an excellent matchup.”

“We are thrilled to take part in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl,” said Mike Hamrick, Director of Athletics at Marshall. “The team will get two weeks of additional practice, along with gaining valuable national television exposure. Marshall University has a significant alumni contingent in, not only the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, but the entire state of Florida. The prospect of showcasing Herd Football to that region is exciting.”

Marshall is led by head coach Doc Holliday, who returns to the Sunshine State after serving as an assistant coach for the University of Florida under Urban Meyer from 2005-07. Holliday was the associate head coach at Florida when the Gators won the 2006 National Championship.

“I want to thank the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl staff, President Dr. Stephen J. Kopp, AD Mike Hamrick and the Conference USA staff for the opportunity to play in this game,” said Holliday.  “We are excited to bring our program to the great state of Florida, which is home to over 30 of our current players and many future prospects.”

Marshall’s defense is led by senior defensive stalwart Vinny Curry, a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, as the nation’s top defensive end, as well as candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s best defensive player), the Chuck Bednarik Award (nation’s best defensive player) and the Rotary Lombardi Award (nation’s best lineman). Curry ranks second nationally this season with 21.5 tackles for loss, tied for second nationally with six forced fumbles and tied for fifth with 11 sacks. His 48.0 career tackles for loss is also tops among all active FBS student-athletes, while his 26.5 sacks rank him seventh.

Thundering Herd junior wide receiver Aaron Dobson led the team with 10 receiving touchdowns this season, while the running back tandem of Tron Martinez (591 rushing yards, 3 TDs) and Travon Van (529 rushing yards, 3 TDs) paced the ground attack in 2011.

Marshall (6-6, 5-3) has played the 12th-toughest schedule in the nation, according to the GBE College Football Ratings. Marshall won a program-record five Conference USA games and finished second in the league’s East Division. The Thundering Herd will be making the 10th bowl appearance in school history and first since 2009, when they posted a 21-17 victory over Ohio in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit.

FIU Selected for 2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.  – FIU, led by explosive playmaker T.Y. The Panthers, from the Sun Belt Conference, filled a slot for the BIG EAST, which didn’t have enough teams to fulfill its bowl commitments. FIU, which fielded its first-ever team in 2002, posted a school-record eight wins in 2011, including a road victory over BIG EAST co-champions Louisville.

“FIU brings one of the top young coaches in Mario Cristobal with very talented playmakers and an extremely enthusiastic fan base,” said Brett Dulaney, Executive Director of the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg. “It is very impressive to see a program that is only in its 10th season of playing football accomplishing so much success on the football field. I also want to recognize their passionate fans who let us know how excited they would be to come to St. Petersburg with hundreds of posts on our social media pages.”

FIU (8-4, 5-3) enters the contest on a three-game winning streak and has won four of its last five games.  In 2010 the Panthers defeated Toledo, 34-32, in its inaugural bowl game at the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

"We are very honored to be invited to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg,” said Pete Garcia, Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment for FIU. “I am excited for both our team and our fans. This will give our fans an opportunity to watch their football team finish off a great season."

"On behalf of our great university, it is with great excitement that our football program accepts this bid to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl,” said FIU Head Coach Mario Cristobal.  “2011 has been another historical season for our program, and playing in a bowl right here in our home state is a tremendous opportunity for our student athletes and fans."

Hilton, a senior wide receiver, paced the offense with 64 receptions for 950 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Sophomore running back Kedrick Rhodes became just the second Panther and the first in FIU’s FBS history to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a single season with 1,121 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 2011.

"We are privileged to have him as our keynote speaker this year and I am confident that the student-athletes and other guests at the Kickoff Luncheon will be moved and motivated after listening to him.”
